What is Beef Tallow?
Beef Tallow, specifically, derives from a beef cow, such as a steer. A steer is a castrated male cow that is raised for meat production. The tallow comes from the steer’s kidney fat after being processed. This part of the beef is usually thrown away. When processed and liquified it turns into beef tallow that looks the consistency of lotion. This is a natural process that has been around for centuries to nourish your skin with rich fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins.

homemade beef tallow lotion recipe
What you’ll need:
- Slow cooker
- Stove Pot
- 2 large glass bowls
- Handheld mixer
- Cheesecloth for straining
- Food Processor (optional, but highly recommended)
- Knife and Cutting Board
Ingredients:
- 2 lbs of beef fat (Talk with your local meat processor for their extra beef kidney fat)
- 2 cups of olive oil
- 1 tsp of lavender essential oil
- 1 tsp of frankincense essential oil
- 2 cups water
- 2 tbsp salt
Instructions:
- First, take your 2 lbs of beef fat and cut it up into small chunks. Place your pieces into the food processor to be ground into a fine consistency. Note: It’s best to do this when your beef fat is cold from the freezer. At this temperature, it will not stick to your processor. You can also ask your local beef processor to cut this step for you.
- Place your processed beef fat, 2 cups of water, and 2 tbsp salt into your slow cooker and turn on low for 8 hours. After the 8-hour time frame, your beef fat should be liquified and should notice a few chunks of accessive impurities. Turn your burner off and let it cool.
- Once your liquified fat is cool down, it’s time to take your large glass bowl and cheesecloth to strain those impurities out. Do this step 3 times total. We want to make sure there are no extra chunks besides that liquid gold.
- Leave your liquified strained tallow in the glass bowl and leave it on your counter until it comes to room temperature. Place your tallow in the fridge overnight to solidify.
- Next Morning take your solidified tallow out of the fridge. Gently press on one side of the tallow to pop it out of the bowl. You will notice water at the bottom of the bowl. Don’t freight! This is normal. Scrap the bottom of your tallow with any impurities you may find. Then Cut your tallow into 4 sections. We will need to liquefy again!
- Place your 4 solidified tallow sections into a 4 qt size burner pot. Add 2 cups of water and 2 tbsp of salt again for this process. Turn the burner on low and wait for the tallow to liquefy. Once the tallow has completely melted, turn the burner off and it cool down. Strain your tallow again once, leave it on the counter at room temperature, and place it in the fridge overnight. Follow this step 2 more times.
- In the last step, take your liquified tallow at room temperature and add 2 cups of olive oil and 2 tbsp of essential oils. Stir until well combined. Let it sit until it hardens.
- Take your handheld mixer to the hardened oil mixture. Blend to your desired consistency. Lotion should look light and fluffy. Place your lotion in a sealed tight container and enjoy!
